Pentagons rekryteringssiffror har gått upp den sista månaden, och man säger sig ha mött sin kvot. Men siffrorna är ändå inte bra. Man behöver rekrytera 80.000 soldater i år och man ligger nu 10% under, med 3 månader kvar av budgetåret. Den enda orsaken till att man har klarat sig är att man nu tar i stort sätt alla ungdomar som inte är hjärndöda. Om du kan stå upp och vet vad du heter så kan du bli soldat. Det här kommer att sänka truppernas kvalité och på sikt är det inte ens säkert att man kan fortsätta rekrytera den armé som de neokonservativa säger sig behöva.
Problemen är många, men ett är att det amerikanska samhället långsamt håller på att moderniseras. Unga människor tycker inte längre att det är coolt att dö dör sitt land, speciellt när de ser att inga neokonservativa eller nyliberaler är beredda att göra det.
När unga svenskar ser fram emot ett spännande liv inom IT eller bioteknologi så är det enda som de här amerikanska ungdomarna kan se fram emot en grav på en militärkyrkogård och det är inte riktigt lika spännande.
Det här betyder att USAs militära ställning på sikt kan vara hotad, för USA behöver kontinuerligt kunna rekrytera stora mängder soldater.

Recruiting woes plaguing the Army and the Marine Corps, partly over parental concerns about the war in Iraq, have raised such concerns among members of Congress that the Senate Armed Services Committee has summoned General Myers and the Army and Marine Corps chiefs to testify on Thursday. Of the 139,000 troops in Iraq, the Army provides about 105,000 troops and the Marine Corps about 22,000.
“We face a challenge in recruiting right now, especially for the ground forces like the Army and the Marine Corps,” Gen. Peter Pace of the Marines, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs, told the committee during a separate hearing today on his nomination to succeed General Myers as chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
For example, Marine Corps recruiters are now having to spend an average of 12 hours per recruit they enlist, up from about 3 hours a year or so ago, according to Marine officials.
General Pace noted that while recruiting numbers were down, re-enlistments were above historic averages, making up some of the gap. “Those within uniform serving this country get it,” General Pace said.
