The Game Plan, amerikansk storfilm i sportens förlovade land

Sport och speciellt college-sport är big business i USA.
Det är helt omöjligt att ens tänka sig USA utan de mycket speciella amerikanska sporterna “fotboll” som egentligen borde kallas handboll och baseball.
Den som inte följer den senaste matchen framför teven med grabbarna på helgen och sedan kommer in till jobbet utan att veta hur det gick kan lika gärna gå hem och dra något gammalt över sig.
Sportmetaforerna är djupt rotade i det amerikanska psyket och för universiteten är sport en viktig inkomstkälla.
Det positiva är dock att amerikanska barn faktiskt har börjat spela riktig fotboll, bl.a. i den utmärkta American Youth Soccer Association där mina barn har spelat.
Ayso är utomordentligt populär för både killar och tjejer över hela Silicon Valley och det är därifrån det amerikanska begreppet Soccer Mom har kommit, dvs mamman som kör sina barn fram och tillbaks mellan de olika fotbollsmatcherna i förorterna på helgen.
Jon Weinbach skriver i Wall Street Journal om sportens viktiga ställning pÃ¥ Ohio State University: Inside College Sports’ Biggest Money Machine
At $109,382,222 for the current year, Ohio State’s athletic budget is the largest in the nation and the biggest in the history of college sports. It allows the school to field 36 varsity teams in everything from baseball and soccer to riflery and synchronized swimming. The school spends about $110,000 on each of its 980 athletes, which is triple the amount the university spends per undergraduate on education.
The budget for this academic year allots $65,000 in private jet time, or roughly 11 hours, to men’s basketball coach Thad Matta for recruiting trips over 200 miles — and a further 15 hours of jet time for the coach’s personal travel. A just-completed $19.5 million renovation of the football team’s practice facility, funded with a large donation from Limited Brands Chief Executive Leslie Wexner, added a players-only entrance, a lounge that has six flat-panel TVs, three videogame systems and a juice bar.
Det är därför inte precis oväntat att Disney Pictures nya sport-influerade film The Gameplan har spelat för utsålda hus över hela USA och fört in nära 60 miljoner dollar till Disney.
Filmen handlar om en av USA:s absoluta ikoner, en quarter back, spelad av Dwayne Johnson. som upptäcker att han har en hittills okänd åttaårig dotter.
Synopsis: Quarterback Joe Kingman (Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson) is known as one of the toughest players to ever take the field. Blessed with amazing strength and agility, he’s famed for being able to handle any hit, no matter how ferocious. Kingman’s Boston-based pro football team, The Rebels, is chasing their long-awaited championship and Joe has been living the ultimate bachelor fantasy: he’s cool, rich, famous and the life of every party–and there are a lot of parties. But his dream is suddenly sacked for a loss when he discovers Peyton (Madison Pettis), the 8-year-old daughter he never knew existed, on his doorstep. Now, just as his career is soaring, Joe must learn to juggle his old lifestyle of parties, practices and dates with supermodels while tackling the new challenges of ballet, bedtime stories and baby dolls–all without fumbling.
En familjefilm med andra ord. Det är intressant att jämföra den amerikanska och svenska sportkulturen. Här förekommer t.ex. inte fotbollshuliganer, och sport är alltså enastående viktig på universiteten där de ofta inte speciellt intellektuella sportstjärnorna kommer in på sportstipendier och sedan blir universitetets stora dragplåster.
Den som vill lära sig litet om den amerikanska sportkulturen kommer antagligen att gilla den här filmen.
