Utan en tråd på kroppen eller i varje fall i datorn i USA, trådlöst, Google och WiFi 2.0

Löftena om att många amerikanska städer skulle bygga heltäckande WiF-nät har inte, som Ian Urbina skriver i New York Times, infriats:

It was hailed as Internet for the masses when Philadelphia officials announced plans in 2005 to erect the largest municipal Wi-Fi grid in the country, stretching wireless access over 135 square miles with the hope of bringing free or low-cost service to all residents, especially the poor.
Municipal officials in Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and 10 other major cities, as well as dozens of smaller towns, quickly said they would match Philadelphia’s plans.
But the excited momentum has sputtered to a standstill, tripped up by unrealistic ambitions and technological glitches. The conclusion that such ventures would not be profitable led to sudden withdrawals by service providers like EarthLink, the Internet company that had effectively cornered the market on the efforts by the larger cities.
Now, community organizations worry about their prospects for helping poor neighborhoods get online.
Men trots den svåra motgången så låter sig de trådlösa entusiasterna här i USA inte kuvas.
Erick Schonfeld skriver på Techcrunch om om ett nytt intiativ från Google att utnyttja gamla TV-kanaler som nu blir fria när den amerikanska TV:n blir digital:Google Throws Another Wireless Ball in The Air: WiFi 2.0
The white spaces Google is talking about are parts of the television spectrum that offered extra headroom for channels 2 to 51. Since digital TV signals are more efficient than analog signals, that buffer will no longer be necessary after February, 2009 (when the conversion to digital sets is mandated in the U.S.). So what to do with the extra spectrum? Google is saying give it away and see what happens.
That is not a bad idea. Look at what happened with WiFi. It became so popular and useful precisely because nobody had to bid billions of dollars just for the right to build out a network. Also, it is not clear how much the government would be able to raise even if it did try to auction off the white space. The spectrum is not as clean as the (separate) 700 MHz spectrum that was just auctioned off for $19.6 billion. There are more interference issues. But Google and other tech companies, including Dell and Microsoft, argue that those issues can be solved more or less.

Även om det säkert kommer att ta fem år eller mer innan det blir fullt utbyggt så är det trådlösa Internet på full frammarsch över hela världen.
Den gamla skrivbordsdatorn har redan ersatts av bärbara datorer och nu håller dessa i allt större utsträckning att ersättas av mobiler som Apples iPhone.
Även om en iPhone eller Blackberry ännu inte kan tävla med en bärbar dator så var det precis likadant med skrivbordsdatorn mot minidatorern och minidatorern mot stordatorern.
Den mindre datorn vinner förr eller senare.
Hand i hand med det trådlösa Internet går Cloud Computing, det stora datormoln , tänk stora datacentra, där alla applikationer kommer att sitta och bli accessad via mobiler. Från var som helst. Och applikationerna kommer att vara gratis och reklamfinansierade.
SÃ¥ ser det i alla fall ut nu.
Det här är en oöverskådlig revolution av IT världen som kommer att vända upp och ner inte bara på dataindustrin utan även på samhället som sådant. För om vi inte längre behöver sitta framför skrivbordet för att knacka på en skrivmaskinsliknande dator, varför behöver vi då överhuvudtaget sitta på kontor?
