Mode, modernitet och superhjältar på MOMA i New York

Den 3/5 skrev jag ett inlägg om den senaste Hollywoodfilmen Iron Man som handlar om en superhjälte. Filmen spelar till fulla hus och två av mina tre barn har sett det och gillar den skarpt, inte minst för att den är rolig.
Superhjälten uppfanns i USA under den stora depressionen och har fascinerat amerikaner och oss andra ända sedan dess. Själv växte jag upp med serietidningar om Fantomen och Stålmannen och mina barn har sovit tryggt i sina amerikanska sängar klädda i stålmanspyjamas.
Superhjältarna, både män och kvinnor, har haft ett inte helt oviktigt inflytande på modet i USA och just nu visas en litet ovanlig utställning på Moderna Museet (MOMA) i New York, Superheroes, Fashion and Fantasy som verkar vara värd ett besök även för oss alla som inte sover i Stålmannspyjamas.
Så här skriver MOMA om utställningen som pågår till den 1/9 i år
Fashion not only shares the superhero’s metaphoric malleability, but actually embraces and responds to the particular metaphors that the superhero represents, notably that of the power of transformation. Fashion celebrates metamorphosis, providing unlimited opportunities to remake and reshape the flesh and the self.
Through fashion and the superhero, we gain the freedom to fantasize, to escape the banal, the ordinary, and the quotidian. The fashionable body and the superhero body are sites upon which we can project our fantasies, offering a virtuosic transcendence beyond the moribund and utilitarian.
Cathryn Horn recenserar utställningen i New York Times:
Superheroes emerged in the late 1930s, the hinge years between the misery of the Great Depression and the start of World War II, and American utopianism literally colored the costumes and avenging exploits of the comic heroes as they hurled bowling balls and other objects at the heads of the Axis dictators.
Wonder Woman, created by William Moulton Marston, first appeared against a patriotic Washington skyline in January 1942. The drawn version — unlike Lynda Carter’s television character with her 22-inch waist and ample bust — looks wholesome and cute in her flirty star-patterned skirt and bustier. Clark Kent, when trouble loomed, slipped out of his street clothes and into Superman’s sleek, empowering unitard.
Since speed and flight were crucial to his mission, it’s possible that his attire owed something to circus acrobats’ costumes of the era.
Själv undrar jag om superhjältarna kan ha något med amerikanernas längat efter Jesus att göra, den ultimativa superhjälten som botar sjukdomar, bekämpar ondska och räddas människor undan jordbävningar och storkrig.
Hur som helst så verkar det här vara en originell utställning som är värd ett besök.
