Vi accepterar redan att musiken, litteraturen och bildkonsten alla genomgick en modernistisk förnyelse runt början av 1900-talet.
Kan det vara så att matematiken gjorde detsamma? Det anser i alla fall Jeremy Gray som är professor i matematikens historia vid The Open University i Milton Keynes i England och som har skrivit ett helt magnifikt opus på 515 sidor i just det ämnet som jag nu håller i handen: Plato’s Ghost. The Modernist Transformation of Mathematics i Times Higher Education.
Det här är verkligen en helt gripande bok som man streckläser, trots dess längd. Man träffar gamla kända namn som David Hilbert, Gottlob Frege, Giuseppe Peano, Bertrand Russell, den store banbrytaren Georg Cantor givetvis, som upptäckte, eller var det uppfann, de transfinita numren och mängder med andra viktiga matematiker, filosofer och tänkare som har format dagens vetenskapsbaserade värld.

Not limiting this work to a study of geometry alone, Gray considers the evolution of five fields of mathematics: geometry, analysis, algebra, set theory and logic. He examines many of the new branches of mathematics that arose during the period 1890-1930, including measure theory, topology, transfinite arithmetic and intuitionism. In addition, he pays considerable attention to the many philosophical issues raised by modern mathematics. Chronologically, Gray considers four periods: the period before modernism, culminating in what he calls “the Consensus in 1880″, the arrival of modernism at the end of the 19th century, the embrace of modernism at the beginning of the 20th, and the period after the First World War.

Matematiken är det enda språk som alla människor har gemensamt och Jeremy Grays bok visar hur den matematiska modernismen ligger till grund för mycket av vad vi brukar kalla den moderna civilisationen under de senaste 100 åren. Kapitel som Languages Natural and Artificial, Mathematical Modernism and Psychology, Mathematics and the Mechanization of Thought, som gav upphov till datorn och inte minst the Rise of Mathematical Platonism är riktiga pärlor.
Jämfört med den moderna matematiken är den moderna filosofin väldigt primitiv och ointressant.
Det här är en mycket viktig bok helt enkelt.
